Default osCommerce payment options help please

    Hi Paul,

With osCommerce you have many payment options available to you.

As far as 3rd party payment processors, 2Checkout and Paypal should be ready to go with the version of osCommerce you're using (though I cant be 100% sure about this, as Im not certain which version your host is running)

For accepting credit cards, you will need a merchant account. There are many merchant accounts available, with varying rates and various fees. However, first thing I would do is contact your host and find out which, if any, merchant gateways have been integrated and TESTED on their version on osCommerce (I cannot stress the testing enough - as some of the payment mods included with osCommerce are not actually functional).

Once you have an idea of which gateways are supported by your host, then begin searching for the best merchant provider that utilizes that gateway. If you get your heart set on a gateway and merchant provider, but your hosts snapshot of oscommerce doesn't support it, you will have to get a mod installed or created for you. Make sure you incorporate these costs into your merchant decision.

    I hope this helps...

    Hey Paul,

    Not a problem at all.

What country are you in? This will help isolate a good merchant provider?

As far as SSL goes, there are many options. Although most people on this forum would recommend cheaper ones, check out instantSSL (comodo). Good price and includes a security emblem for your site (I cannot stress enough the importance of a security emblem for an ecommerce site - even though it offer absolutely no additional protection, customers have proven they will buy from a site with a security emblem before they buy from one without). The best one of course is verisign (not best functional wise - all 128 bit ssl certs function pretty much the exact same way - some differences exist, but wont bore you with those, as they are not really important - but Verisign is the most recognized and their emblem experiences the lowest cart abandonment rate - which is why they charge so much)...

Hope all this makes sense and let me know if you have any additional questions...

    Hi Paul,

OK, Ill do the best I can here. 1 thing I cant help you with is a merchant provider in Australia - maybe one of the other fine members here can give some input (AussieBob - where are you )

OK, with Internet Merchant Accounts, there will essentially be 2 parts:

    Gateway and Merchant Provider

The Gateway is what needs to be integrated with osCommerce - is responsible for transfering information (basically)

The Merchant Provider is the bank (or someone with a bank funding the transactions in the background)

What you need to do is make sure that your osCommerce has a mod installed, and functioning properly for your gateway.

Ask your gateway and provider to set up a test account for you, before you buy and make sure everything is working properly.

Let me know if I did a horrible job explaining this and if you have any other questions.

    Hi Paul,

Yes, those are the standard payment modules that come with osCommerce. In the last stable snapshot, not all of these worked properly, as some of the gateways (like authorize.net) had made changes. We have corrected the errors in our snapshot, and osCommerce may have done the same with their latest snapshot (which you are using)

Authorize.net is a great gateway. I would find out which merchant providers in Australia, use the Authotize.net gateway.

A quick search on google and I found this provider that claims to service Canada, US and Australia, but I dont really know anything about them, so cannot recommend one way or the other. Looks like a good place to start though...
