if you were to design a site with adsense in mind..
where would you place your ads? what ad formats would you use? are there any particular colors you'd try to utilize?
I recently redesigned one of my sites to be able to accommodate the leaderboard ad (728 x 90) at the top of my page. another layout I'm interested in trying is the skyscraper/wide skyscraper on the left hand side of the page, close to the content
thought this might generate some interesting discussion ^^

It depends on the lay-out and colors of your site. Take a look at mine... you'll learn something from it since they do have different Ad format:
- Ka Webspy News and Journal (http://kawebspy.kawebspynet.com)
- Cellphones and Gadgets Trend Update (http://cellphonesandgadgets.kawebspynet.com)
- Pinoy Bloggers Directory (http://pinoyblogger.com)

I would go with a theme where links were not blue. Then I'd use blue Adsense ads. I'd make certain my ad link unit integrates well with my menu system. I'd try to put a medium square in the middle of each page. I'd put a leaderboard or banner at the top or bottom. I'd put a skyscrappers (reg. or large) on the right or left.

I always do the opposite of what most webmaster do when it comes to adsense ads. Most webmasters put their ads on the right side of the page. I put mine on the left, where the site menu is traditionally located. I also like to use ads with no borders.
Another trick that I have found to work is to put photos close to the ads. It forces the visitors eyes to look at the photos and they can't help but to see the ads as well. This types of strategies have allowed me to get more than 50 clicks each day.
The best ads are those the visitors don't know are ads. When they know it is an ad, their eyes avoid it. Sometimes I place the ad right at the beginning of a paragraph, so they have to see it. Put it where your visitors are forced to see it, and they will click.

@tesla - its not the opposite. It is what most of the webmaster in this forum did. So its not an invention actually.
