Which system/provider is the best long-term bet?
I had a VPS with CMB Hosting for three months when Chetan Bakhru, the original owner of the company, was in charge. Chetan provided great service and support, and he was the primary reason I chose to go with CMB Hosting instead of with another company.
Unfortunately Chetan was apparently forced to sell out to a new owner because of unknown reasons, and the bad thing about this change is that he sold the business to a guy who told me he would terminate my service in three days.
Why?
Because he wanted to convert from HyperVM to Xen, and apparently he was in such a hurry to make this change that he couldn't care less how it might affect his existing HyperVM clients ... and I was one of them.
He never offered to migrate us to Xen so we could continue hosting with CMB, instead he simply terminated our service on very short notice. I told him we would all appreciate a month or so to make other arrangements (since it sometimes takes this long to find a new provider and setup everything and get it tested and working) but he ignored this request.
Because of this disrespectful treatment of his HyperVM customers I am giving everyone a serious warning about using CMB Hosting. I will never use them again because they don't seem to care how their decisions affect their customers.
What's more, I am no longer interested in using ANY new or small-time VPS hosts any more. Instead I am now seeking a very large and well-established VPS provider with a great reputation for providing consistent and reliable service. I simply cannot tolerate this kind of poor judgment from my providers any more, and I believe (although I could be wrong about this) that a large provider with a good name will not abandon its customers on short notice like CMB Hosting did to me. Hopefully the 'big guys' know better ... :unhappy:
In addition to a big and well-established provider, I prefer an UNMANAGED VPS service. I can manage my own Linux server instances so I'm really looking for a host that offers affordable unmanaged Linux-based VPS service.
Here's something else I have to keep in mind ...
I don't know how frequently large VPS hosting companies convert from HyperVM to Xen (or the other way around) but if one of these systems is clearly better than the other I want to go with the best system from now on. Then maybe my next host will not abandon me in order to switch to a different system.
So here are my questions:
1- Which relatively large and/or very well established VPS hosts offer reliable yet reasonably priced UNMANAGED Linux VPS packages? If you folks can suggest maybe 3-5 with really good reputations I can probably go with one of them.
2- Which is better, HyperVm or Xen, or are there other virtualization systems available these days that promise to be even better in the near future? I'm thinking that if I choose the right system this time, my new host won't switch and leave me behind like the last one did.
